CASER Director, Tietie Says Food Avail Supports for Genetically Modified Foods



The Executive Director of Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights, CASER, and promoter of Food Avail, Bar Frank Tietie at a press briefing today, Tuesday, March 26th 2024 at Chelsea Hotel, Abuja on enhancing increased cultivation of Tela Maize and BT Cowpea, both genetically modified (GM) foods for Nigeria's National Food Security threw his weight and that of his organization behind the National Biosafety Management Agency and the cultivation of Genetically Modified foods.

In a signed press release by Bar Tietie, he said CASER was using the opportunity to dispel the false and unfounded narratives driven by uninformed and economically jobbing groups about genetically modified (GM)  foods which are products of  biotechnology products. 

"We maintain our support for the Nigerian government which began its GM research programme since 1987 and we are grateful to be reaping its benefits today. 

"We maintain our support for the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) as the National authority on all issues of biosafety. If the NBMA says GM foods are safe for human consumption, then they are indeed safe without ANY adverse effects to the humans, animals and the environment.  Therefore we shall continue our campaign for greater application of safe modern biotechnology in agriculture to guarantee the right to food and to end hunger in Nigeria.

Food Avail Nigeria, is a programme of the Citizens Advocacy for Social & Economic Rights (CASER), which promotes the Right to Food and to End Hunger in Nigeria, addressed stakeholders in the agricultural sector to urgently enhance Nigeria’s Food Security through the cultivation of Tela Maize and BT Cowpea, both approved genetically modified food crop varieties in Nigeria.

ASUU UniAbuja begins indefinite strike

  The University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike over some unresolved issues between the management and the union. Some of the issues include the illegal Advertorial for vacancy of the position of Vice Chancellor by the current vice chancellor of the institution and illegal recruitments without due Process. A statement by the Chairperson of the ASUU University of Abuja chapter, Dr Sylvanus Ugoh says the decision to embark on the indefinite strike was reached after the congress of the Chapter with approval by ASUU National.  Ugoh said after following due process in line with ASUU procedures, the Trustees and Principal Officers granted the branch the permission to proceed on an indefinite, comprehensive and total strike until the issues in contention were addressed.
