STERLING BANK, AIR FORCE PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR CANCER CENTRE


Sterling Bank Nigeria plc on Wednesday joined a host of several other organisations and well-meaning individuals to pledge support for Seriake Dickson Foundation and Cancer Centre to be established in honour of the memory of Governor Seriake Dickson's mother, Mrs. Goldcoast Dickson. 



Mrs. Goldcoast Dickson died of cancer on August 8 at the University of Texas M.D Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas, in the United States at the age of 72. 

A press statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Francis Ottah Agbo noted that the immediate past Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Yemi Adeola made the pledge when he led the current Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman and other top executives on a condolence visit to the governor at his Toru-Orua country home in Sagbama Local Government Area.

Mr. Adeola, who described Governor Dickson as a friend of Sterling Bank, said his mother's legacies of selfless service to her family, community and to God which are evident in her children especially in Governor Dickson,  will continue to be remembered. 

He assured that they would be involved in the funeral activities while praying for the eternal repose of her soul and for the family to have the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. 

Similarly, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar has commiserated with the Bayelsa State Governor over the demise of his mother. 

Air Marshal Abubakar was represented by the Air Officer Commanding Nigerian Air Force Mobility Command, Yenagoa, Air Vice Marshal Binkap Napoleon Bali. While presenting a condolence letter to the governor, he thanked him for supporting the fight for peace in Bayelsa State and in the Niger Delta region. 

Honourable Dickson expressed appreciation to the Sterling Bank and Nigerian Air Force delegations for taking out time to come to his Toru-Orua country home to commiserate with him and his family despite their busy schedules.

He said his family decided to honour and immortalize his mother's values by establishing a cancer centre to conduct early screening, diagnosis and to sensitize the people as cancer has become more endemic in the Niger Delta. 

Emphasising that cancer is a terrible disease, the governor said losing his loving mother, whom he noted was reliable, selfless and a solid rock, was difficult but noted that the encouragement from friends and people of goodwill has helped him to take solace in God.

He also solicited the partnership of the Nigerian Air Force Mobility Command which he stressed has successfully carried out several medical outreach programmes in the state, adding there is urgent need to sensitize the people on cancer.

His words: 

"Losing mother evokes a special emotion that only the company of people like you can enable one manage the sense of loss. To  immortalize her values, my family and I are going to establish a cancer centre. Researchers and scientists have said it can not be cured but can be prevented when detected early. So I want to ask for the support of your organization in joining my family and I in the crusade against cancer. 

"I have heard of your outreach programmes in the health sector when you had a medical outreach using your medical team. We can have your skilled people, a team can come and offer services at the centre. 

We want to appreciate the  Chief of Air staff for his thoughtfulness as well as the entire Air Force personnel for the good work you are doing in the state and country at large, we will continue to collaborae with you in securing lives and property. Bayelsa has become one of the safest and stable in the country because of the partnership of the military with our government. 

Comptroller, Nigeria Immigration Service, C.N. Chapp-Jumbo,   Apostle Zilly Aggrey led clergymen, Caucus Chairmen of the  eight local government areas, Actors Guild of Nigeria, Bayelsa branch and several other groups and individuals also paid condolence visits to the governor and his family.

ASUU UniAbuja begins indefinite strike

  The University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike over some unresolved issues between the management and the union. Some of the issues include the illegal Advertorial for vacancy of the position of Vice Chancellor by the current vice chancellor of the institution and illegal recruitments without due Process. A statement by the Chairperson of the ASUU University of Abuja chapter, Dr Sylvanus Ugoh says the decision to embark on the indefinite strike was reached after the congress of the Chapter with approval by ASUU National.  Ugoh said after following due process in line with ASUU procedures, the Trustees and Principal Officers granted the branch the permission to proceed on an indefinite, comprehensive and total strike until the issues in contention were addressed.
