Easter: Foundation empowers 1,500 PWDs

An NGO, Sir David Osunde Foundation, has empowered no fewer than 1,500 persons with disabilities (PWDs) to cushion the effects of the current economic challenges.

Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the foundation, Mr Ikem Uchegbulam, said this in Abuja, ahead of the 32nd special Easter Monday National Celebration, in honour of PWDs.

Uchegbulam said that the beneficiaries were selected from different parts of the country, irrespective of their religion, ethnicity or social status, with the aim of improving their wellbeing.

According to him, the beneficiaries have been severely impacted by the triple burdens of economic hardship, political instability and security challenges.

He said that many of them were struggling to have one square meal per day while majority of them had felt isolated and abandoned.

“The foundation looks deeply into empowerment. We have mobility support which ranges from wheel chair, recorder, clutches, guide aid and other assisting devices.

“Also, we are looking at economic empowerment, items like sewing machines, grinding machines and all that can help a person to have other sources of income has been procured.

“This is to help persons with disabilities depending on their areas of need,” he said.

Uchegbulam further said that the special Easter celebration would provide opportunity for PWDs to showcase their talentS in various fields of endeavour, with some of them displaying various goods that they had produced with their hands to guests.

He added that PWDs would also hold a special prayer session for peace and progress of the country during the celebration. (NAN)
