ABUJA BASED EATERY, FOOTBALL CLUB TO RAISE OVER 10,000 MEALS FOR IDP’S; LESS-PRIVILEGED IN ABUJA….Calls on well-meaning Nigerians to be their Brother's keeper

As the dreaded COVID 19 pandemic rages through the globe, Nigeria,  home of the largest gathering of people in Africa, begins to   shut down due to the pandemic, Abuja's prominent Eatery, COCKEREL Fast Foods has joined the global call to help the needy.


Taking a cue from Chinese muliti- billionaire, Jack Ma and Africa's richest man Aliko Dangotte, the company has decided to raise funds to provide over 10,000 plates of food for IDP'S and other less privileged Nigerians caught in the lockdown due to the pandemic.

COVID-19 has so far claimed one life and infected 65 others in Nigeria. This has resulted in locking down of business activity in some states of the Federation.

According to the Chief Operating Officer of COCKEREL, Mr Obokhare Kingsley Imogbore, staff of the restaurant is expected to produce food packs for the IDP'S stranded in the various camps due to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown.

" At this critical time,  humanity is being threatened by a grave pandemic, we must all stand up to be our brother's keeper especially to the less privileged in the society' Mr Obokhare stated.

The initiative is to encourage Nigerians of goodwill to donate just N500 per plate of food which the Eatery would produce and deliver to the IDP Camps.

According to Mr Ofem Arikpo, one of the sponsors of this programme and member of Corporate Kickers Sports Club (CKSC) a football recreational club in Abuja
“Our members decided to support the less privileged in the society because we know that some might not have the capacity to manage this lockdown like others”.

He added that,
   "As residents of the Nation's capital stock up their homes with food stuff and provisions in compliance with the Federal Governments directive to stay at home, there are some who won't be able to stock up, so we who are more privileged have decided to invite our friends, colleagues, co-workers to buy 1 plate 2, 10, 1000 or 10,000 plates, of food to help our disadvantaged brothers and sisters displaced by insurgency".

We hope Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike rise to this challenge and support our brothers and sisters who are holed-up in various IDP Camps in and around Abuja” he concluded.

Obokhare enjoined Nigerians to adhere to the policy of Social Distancing and other hygienic measures rolled out by the Federal Ministry of Health as well as the FCT Minister stating that
"The Restaurant would maintain the highest hygienic standards which they are known for to ensure quality and healthy production and delivery of meals to the IDP'S" 

We may recall that the Federal Government had earlier put in place measures to prevent the spread of COVID -19 in the Nation's capital while state governments as well followed suit to ensure that the crisis is checked across the country. 

 The Presidential Task Force for the Control of Covid-19 headed by Secretary to the Government, Boss Mustapha had earlier announced these measures to curb further spread of the Coronavirus.

The SGF said, “All land borders that have been hitherto under partial closure shall now be closed for human traffic for four weeks effective, 23rd March, 2020; in order to protect Federal Civil and Public Servants, a circular to be issued by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation shall direct on actions to be taken immediately.

“All Abuja and Lagos residents are strongly advised to stay at home, avoid mass congregation of any kind as well as non-essential outings until further advice is given.”

The stay at home policy has put a great strain on the upkeep and feeding of IDP'S and other less privileged Nigerians who rely on donations, support and daily income from well-meaning Nigerians. Hopefully this initiative, like those of Aliko Dangotte and others would help bring succour to less privileged Nigerians as we go through this trying period in our Nation's history.

ASUU UniAbuja begins indefinite strike

  The University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike over some unresolved issues between the management and the union. Some of the issues include the illegal Advertorial for vacancy of the position of Vice Chancellor by the current vice chancellor of the institution and illegal recruitments without due Process. A statement by the Chairperson of the ASUU University of Abuja chapter, Dr Sylvanus Ugoh says the decision to embark on the indefinite strike was reached after the congress of the Chapter with approval by ASUU National.  Ugoh said after following due process in line with ASUU procedures, the Trustees and Principal Officers granted the branch the permission to proceed on an indefinite, comprehensive and total strike until the issues in contention were addressed.
